Hey there! 👋
If you’ve been around offices or schools lately, you might’ve been exposed. You know what I’m talking about, everyone’s sneezing, coughing, sniffling and used tissues are piling high. 🤧 My friend just went down with what she called the worst flu of her life, and apparently, it spread through her office faster than gossip. 👀
Luckily, we can do a little more than just reach for tissues and soup. Let’s talk how essential oils can help us ride out colds and flu this season.
Why Give Essential Oils a Try?
Most of us know the misery of a cold—congestion, headaches, sore throat, fatigue. If your usual remedies aren’t cutting it, essential oils may help relieve symptoms, improve sleep, and support recovery. 😌 While they’re not a miracle cure, certain oils can reduce discomfort and even help your immune system work a little better while your body fights the virus.
What are the Benefits of Essential Oils for Colds & Flu?
· Support sleep: Oils like lavender, chamomile can help you rest. Better sleep = better immune response. Research shows people who sleep less than six hours have four times the risk of catching a cold.
· Relieve congestion & headache: Peppermint and eucalyptus oils have menthol and 1,8-cineole, which help clear nasal passages and reduce headaches.
· Antiviral properties: Some studies show tea tree and eucalyptus oils may help combat viral activity in vitro.
· Comfort & relaxation: Flu can be stressful on the body—essential oils calm the nervous system and soothe fatigue.
How Do We Use Essential Oils Safely?
· Steam inhalation
Add up to 7 drops of your favorite oil (might I suggest Bea Oleia Eucalyptus Pure Essential Oil? 😉) in a bowl of hot water.
Lean over it, cover your head with a towel, and take deep breaths for 1–2 minutes.
Do this a few times a day to help loosen congestion.
· Diffusers:
A gentle way to fill a room with calming, healing scents—great while working or just chilling.
· Topical rubs:
Mix pure essential oils with a carrier oil (Oleia Pure Oil!) for a chest, neck, or foot massage. Never put oils straight on your skin!
· Direct sniffing:
Dab 1–3 drops on a cotton ball or handkerchief and take a few sniffs to help open your airways.
Should We Worry About Using Essential Oils? ⚠️
Essential oils are strong—don’t swallow them.
Always dilute before putting on skin.
Kids and pregnant friends: check with a doctor or aromatherapist first.
And heads up: peppermint oil isn’t safe for little ones under six.
What Else Can Help Alongside Oils? ⚖️
Take some over the counter flu medicine or your doctor prescribed ones 🧑🏻⚕️
Short-term decongestants to clear nasal stuffiness.
Warm liquids like arrozcaldo or tea with lemon + honey—classic but effective.
Zinc lozenges or echinacea might help you kick that cold faster.
